Jamiat-i-Islami Afghanistan leader Mohammad Younus Qanuni has been appointed as first vice-president, the presidential spokesman confirmed on Tuesday.
Aimal Faizi wrote on his Twitter page that the decision was taken at a meeting, chaired by President Hamid Karzai. Politicians and government officials were in attendance. Participants endorsed the nomination of Qanuni, who will be referred to the Wolesi Jirga (the lower house of parliament) for a trust vote.He replaces Marshal Qasim Fahim, who died last week of a cardiac arrest.
Subsequently, Jamiat-i-Islami and mujahideen leaders named Qanuni to replace Fahim.Qanuni has served as interior minister and speaker of the lower house.
