Addressing a press conference, ANSA chief Popalzai Popal hoped the set of codes would address city planning and urban development issues in accordance with the geography, climate, land and culture of the country.During the process of setting new building codes, he said the record of seismic activity, precipitation, wind speed and directions were taken into consideration.

He said implementation of this code would improve quality and safety in construction and reduce other problems concerning the construction. He revealed that absence of building codes was a hurdle in foreign direct investment in the construction sector.

A message of the vice president Muhammad Karim Khalili was read out on the occasion. Khalili lauded formation of building codes in the country. In the last one decade, construction of highways, bridges and townships was a major milestone but the matter of quality remained a matter of concern, the vice president stated.

He also expressed caution over the mushrooming of high buildings in various cities, particularly capital Kabul. “I have notices a number of townships and apartments that paid no attention to the emergency exits, sewerage system etc”, he added.

Mohammad Yusuf Pashtun, a presidential advisor for the Department of Urban Development, said that provision of the code was done to improve the quality of construction projects and attract foreign investment.
