A technical team would be appointed to study the feasibility of laying a gas pipeline from Azerbaijan to South Asia through Afghanistan, the Presidential Palace said on Tuesday.
President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday met with Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev in Baku and discussed the possibility of strengthening relations between the two countries through various regional organisations.
President Aliyev assured Ghani of his country’s continued cooperation with Afghanistan in various areas. Ghani hailed Azerbaijan’s development and said: “Not only we want our relations expanded, but also we want to benefit from your experience in terms of reforms and development.”
Ghani added that he wanted Afghanistan to be connected to Europe through “Azure Route” and without assistance from Azerbaijan, it would not be possible.
The route will connect Afghanistan to Europe through Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Black Sea.
Azure route requires financial resources and Afghanistan will propose its revival to donors at the London Conference, which is due on December 4 and 5.
