Taliban’s designated deputy governor for northern Balkh province has been detained in the central capital Kabul, the spy service said on Tuesday.
In a statement, the National Directorate of Security or NDS said the Taliban leader, Maulvi Mohammad Rustam, was arrested when he wanted to travel to Pakistan. It claimed the detainee had confessed to his appointment as deputy governor for Balkh seven months ago by his senior Mullah Akhtar Mansoor.
Rustam directed and participated in insurgent activities in Albruz, Chamtal, Chahar Boluk districts, the NDS statement said.
The Taliban have not commented about the arrest of their key member.
