President Ashraf Ghani has extended the tenure of the 34 nominative members of the Meshrano Jirga, or upper house of the parliament, his office said on Saturday.
Under the constitution, the Senate has 102 members. One-third (34) of them are elected by district councils for a three-year term, 34 by provincial councils for four years and as many nominated by the president for five years.
The Presidential Palace said Ghani took the decision after a meeting senators on Friday. Senate Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar and members of the administrative delegation also attended the meeting.
Niamatullah Sayer, deputy head of the Office of Administrative Affairs, read out the presidential decree extending the term of the nominative senators. The decree was issued in response to a request from the MPs.
In accordance with the decree, the appointed members of the Senate will continue to work until the end of the upper house’s current tenure and appointment of new members under Article 84 of the constitution.
