The melon yield has considerably increased in southern Helmand province this year, an agriculture official said on Thursday
Acting Agriculture Director Roohullah Rawan linked the boost to favourable climatic conditions and measures to protect the crop from insects.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News growers had been provided with improved seeds and farming techniques and special melon plots set up by the department.
Without giving specific figures for the produce in 2014 and 2013, Rawan said Helmand’s melons and watermelons were also exported to other provinces.
Gula Jan -- a farmer who brought his melon produce from Nawa district to Lashkargah -- said he was happy over the bumper crop he had harvested this year.
