Dozens of insurgents, including senior commanders, have been killed and many more injured during the recent ongoing clearing operation in Sangin district, Helmand province, Afghan security officials said.
According to the authorities the joint operation has been conducted by the Afghan National Army (ANA) and the Afghan National Police (ANP). The brave and professional Afghan security personnel forced dozens of other insurgents to flee the area.
General Sayed Malook, commander of the Afghan National Army 215 Maiwand Corps, told the media that ANA is now better equipped and have the capacity to conduct security operations. He also appreciated the international security forces for their long support in training and equipping the ANA, and for being available to help in critical situations.
In another recent security development in Helmand, an insurgent-designated district chief and 12 of his armed men were killed as a result of an airstrike. The raid was conducted by the International Security Assistance Force in Marjah district, Helmand police spokesman, said.
The district chief, Dr Muhammad Shafi, also confirmed the strike, saying Mawlwi Yahir Muhammad, responsible for disruptive activities in the area, had been killed.
