11 dead as Maiwand attack beaten back



Eleven people were killed on Monday when a group of militants stormed the Maiwand district office complex in southern Kandahar province, officials said.

Samim Khpalwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that attack at 12.00 noon touched off a fierce gun-battle between security forces and militants. The fire exchange lasted an hour and a half.
Zia Durrani, police spokesman, said one of the militants rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the gate and four others started gunfire at the security personnel on duty.
Durrani added after a long firefight, the four militants, who were wearing police uniforms, were gunned down by security forces.
Lt. Gen. Sher Zaman, the crime branch head for Maiwand district, an Afghan soldier, a policeman and four civilians were killed.
Four other civilians and three policemen were wounded. He said the attack happened during the rush hour when dozens of people were in the district’s office complex. Nobody has so far taken responsibility for the attack.
