Sixteen prisoners were freed from a Talibaninfo-icon-run prison and 17 militants guarding the facility were killed during an operation in southern Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence said on Monday.
A MoD statement said the Afghan National Army (ANA) Special Forces raided the jail in Greshk district on Sunday night, freeing 16 civilian captives and killing 17 militants including six suicide bombers.
The prison located in Khounzi locality was related to Mullahinfo-icon Abdul Bari Zakir, the MoD statement said, adding identities of the freed persons would be revealed later. Some weapons and ammunition were recovered from the prison.
Greshk district police chief, 1st Lt. Mohammad Ismail Khpalwak told Pajhwok Afghan News foreign troops also took part in the raid that took place on Sunday night.
He said seven Taliban gunmen guarding the prison were killed and five persons including two policemen and three civilians were freed.
The Taliban have so far said nothing about the incident.
